Bangladesh : Cultivate potato, maize instead of tobacco


Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram, Nusrat Sultana, urged discouraging tobacco cultivation and encouraging farmers to grow potatoes and maize instead. Speaking at a training program on tobacco control, she emphasized offering full government support to farmers who shift crops. Kurigram has over 400 tobacco farmers. Officials pledged incentives and collaboration to promote healthier, alternative agriculture.
“Aiming to decrease the use of tobacco products, the tobacco farmers should be discouraged at first to cultivate tobacco. Local Agriculture Department Officials and the concerned department staff should work uninomously to encourage the Tobacco cultivators to cultivate Potato and Maize instead of Tobacco,” said Nusrat Sultana, Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram as the Chief Guest at a Training Programme organised on the Implementation of Smoking and Tobacco Products’ Use Control at the Hall room of DC on Tuesday morning.
DC Nusrat Sultana further said, ” The number of tobacco farmers in Kurigram is more than 400. We’ll talk with all the tobacco farmers and encourage them to cultivate potato and maize instead of tobacco. If the tobacco farmers respond to our call, we’ll render them all government facilities including the Agriculture Incentives.”
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram Uttam Kumar Roy presented the three day long training subjects through the digital screen while NDC Saikhul Hasan Khan operated the programme. Among others, the programme was attended, by Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health Services Arafat Raman, Kurigram Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sayed Parvin, Assistant Director of the Dept. of Narcotics Control Rafiqul Islam, BNP leader Prof Hasibur Rahman, Memeber Secretary of Kurigram district Shramik karmachari Oikkya Jote and General Secretary of Kurigram district Press Club Aminur Rahman.
