Bangladesh: Government eyes to reopen all closed sugar mills in country
The interim government of Bangladesh plans to reopen all closed sugar mills, with a focus on revitalizing the industry. Adilur Rahman Khan, adviser to the Ministry of Industries, announced the formation of a task force to address the challenges preventing the mills’ operation. The initiative aims to boost the economy and improve the livelihoods of underdeveloped areas.
The interim government has announced plans to reopen all closed sugar mills in the Bangladesh, said Adilur Rahman Khan, the adviser to the Ministry of Industries.
At the start of the sugar-crushing season at North Bengal Sugar Mills, Khan highlighted the government’s commitment to reviving the sugar industry. “The government is taking steps to reopen all the sugar mills that have been shut down,” he said.
He shared that a task force has been formed to address the long-standing issues keeping these mills closed. “The task force is working to identify and overcome the challenges preventing these mills from operating again,” Khan added.
Khan expressed hope for success, emphasising the importance of teamwork and community support. “We aim to make this initiative a success by working together and with the support of the people. Our goal is to improve the lives of those living in underdeveloped areas,” he said.
Senior Secretary of the Industries Ministry Zakia Sultana attended the event as a special guest, while Dr Lipika Bhadra, Chairperson of the Bangladesh Sugar and Foods Industries Corporation, presided over the program.
Other speakers included ATM Kamrul Islam, a director of the Bangladesh Sugar and Foods Industries Corporation; Deputy Commissioner Asma Shaheen; Superintendent of Police Md Marufat Hussain; and sugarcane farmer Hasan Raja.
The event reflected the government’s focus on strengthening the sugar industry and supporting the communities dependent on it.
