Bangladesh imports rice from India, Myanmar
Bangladesh has received significant rice shipments to address rising prices. The Atn Victory vessel delivered 22,000 tonnes of Atap rice from Myanmar under a G2G agreement, while the MV BMC Pandora brought 15,000 tonnes of parboiled rice from India via an open tender. These imports aim to stabilize local rice prices, which have surged due to disrupted production.
A vessel, Atn Victory, has arrived at Chittagong port with 22,000 metric tonnes of Atap rice from Myanmar purchased under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement, food ministry’s senior information and public relations officer Imdad Islam said on Wednesday (January 29).
Besides, the ship MV BMC Pandora has arrived at Chittagong Port with 15,000 metric tonnes of parboiled rice from India, imported through an open tender.
The rice will be unloaded soon, with all necessary measures in place, said Imdad.
Bangladesh, the world’s third-largest rice producer, typically produces nearly 40 million tonnes of rice a year to feed its population of 170 million. However, natural disasters often disrupt production and lead to increased dependency on imports.
Rice prices have soared in the local market in recent weeks. The government is importing the staple to cool the local market.
