Bangladesh : Premium quality aromatic rice to be exported

Bangladesh, with surplus aromatic rice production, is exploring exports of premium varieties like BRRI Dhan-34 and BRRI Dhan-50. BRRI handed over rice samples to the Foreign Ministry for diplomatic gifting. These high-quality varieties, developed by BRRI scientists, showcase Bangladesh’s rice excellence. As the 4th largest rice producer globally, the country ensures food security while pursuing export potential.
Bangladesh now has a good volume of fine and premium quality aromatic rice which can be exported after ensuring food security for ever-increasing population of the country, said Dr Md Shahjahan Kabir Director General of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI).
To promote the export of local variety aromatic rice the BRRI provide sample of some premium quality aromatic rice verities BRRI dhan34 and BRRI dhan50 invented by BRRI scientists.
The BRRI DG Dr Md Shahjahan Kabir handed over the samples of two such varieties to Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Masud Bin Momen on Sunday.
Director General of the SAARC and BIMSTEC, MoFA Md Shamsul Haque and Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) Dr Shaikh Mohammad Bokhtiar were also present on the occasion. The first verities is a long and slender grain rice namely BRRI Dhan-50 locally known as Bangla Moti (Pearl of Bengal) and the other one is a small grain fine aromatic Pilaf Rice known as BRRI Dhan-34 similar to local Chini Gura (Sugar Grain) Rice.
In an aim to share the rice as a token gift to different Embassy or High Commissions in Dhaka they handover the rice, said a press release of BRRI on Thursday.
Bangladesh is the highest average rice yielding country in South Asia and 4th largest rice producing country in the world.
During 2018-19, Bangladesh produced 38.70 MT rice, enabling a surplus of 4.0 MT after meeting the requirements for 167.0 million people.
