Bangladesh : Rangpur farmers start preparing seedbed for Boro rice cultivation

Farmers in Rangpur region have begun preparing Boro rice seedbeds alongside ongoing Aman harvests and winter crop sowing. Seedbed preparation will peak from December, with early planting in lowlands mid-December and widespread transplanting from mid-January. The region targets a record 23 lakh tonnes of Boro rice, backed by extensive government support.

 RANGPUR, Nov 27, 2025 (BSS) – Farmers have already begun preparing their Boro rice seedbed with huge enthusiasm for cultivation of the major cereal crop in all five districts of Rangpur agricultural region this season.

 
In addition to harvesting Aman paddy in full swing along with sowing seeds of early potatoes, corn and winter vegetables in their lands, enthusiastic farmers are preparing seedbeds for early varieties of Boro rice.

 
Additional Director (In-charge) of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) for Rangpur region Agriculturist Md Shirajul Islam said that the process of preparing seedbeds of Boro rice varieties will get full momentum from next month.

  
“Early planting of Boro rice seedlings in lowland and riverine char areas will begin from mid-December to complete the harvest before the next monsoon, so that the crops in these areas are not submerged by early rains or floodwater,” he said.

 
However, the planting process of Boro rice seedlings on the mainland will gain full momentum from mid-January and continue till late February or early March next year in the region.


“Meanwhile, farmers have already prepared Boro rice seedbeds on 1,579 hectares of land till Wednesday in the region,” he said.
 

The present interim government through the DAE has set an all-time record target of producing 23,08,715 tonnes of clean Boro rice (34,63,0672 tonnes of paddy) from 5,09,094 hectares of land for Rangpur agricultural region this season. 

      
Of them, farmers will produce 11,13,909 tonnes of hybrid variety Boro rice from 2,30,316 hectares of land, 11,75,867 tonnes of high yielding variety rice from 2,77,753 hectares and 1,939 tonnes of local variety Boro rice from 1,025 hectares of land. 

 
Extensive steps have been taken to assist farmers succeed in the Boro rice cultivation programme to further increase rice production in the current Rabi season.

 
The interim government is providing farmers with special support to inspire them in bringing more land under Boro rice cultivation this time and ensure proper cultivation of the major cereal crop.

 
After completing Aman rice harvest in mid-December, farmers from the five districts of Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat of the region are expected to devote their full efforts to make the Boro rice cultivation programme a success.

The DAE, Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Barind Multipurpose Development Authority, Rural Electrification Board and commercial banks will assist farmers in Boro rice cultivation.


 
The authorities concerned are to ensure smooth supply of high quality Boro rice seeds, fertilisers and power to farmers for smooth cultivation of Boro rice.

 
In addition, field level DAE officers will provide necessary support and latest technology to farmers for successful Boro rice cultivation to increase rice production to ensure food security amidst adverse effects of climate change.

 
Md Mamunur Rashid, a PhD Fellow in the Department of Agricultural Extension at Dinajpur Haji Mohammad Danesh University of Science and Technology, said farmers get the maximum yield if they transplant Boro rice seedlings in cropland by February 15.

 
He especially suggested farmers for adoption of Alternate wetting and Drying irrigation method and ensuring proper agronomic management to get maximum Boro rice yield at reduced cost, also saving huge underground water and fuel cost for irrigation.

  
Farmers Abul Hossain, Zulfiquer Ali, Dulal Chandra, Arman Hossain, Nur Hossain and Arifur Rahman of different villages in Rangpur Sadar, Taraganj and Gangachara upazilas said they are expecting to bring more land under Boro rice cultivation this time than last year.

 
Ariful Haque Batul, a solvent farmer of village Najirdigar in Rangpur Sadar, said he is planning to prepare Boro rice seedbeds from the first week of December to cultivate Boro rice on his seven acres of land this season.
