Bangladesh : US ship carrying 62,150 tonnes of wheat arrives at Ctg Port

Bangladesh has received another wheat shipment from the United States under a government-to-government deal, boosting supplies to meet domestic demand. With local production covering only a small share, the country continues to rely heavily on imports to bridge its wheat requirement.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Food issued today (27 March), the shipment is part of a cash purchase under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement signed between the US and the Bangladesh government.

Earlier, the first shipment brought 58,457 tonnes of wheat to the country.

Sample testing of the wheat on board has already started, and arrangements are underway for its quick unloading.

Out of the total shipment, 37,290 tonnes will be unloaded at Chattogram, and the remaining 24,860 tonnes at Mongla port.

The press release added that Bangladesh has been importing wheat from the United States on a G2G basis. Under the G to G-01 and G to G-02 agreements, all wheat has already arrived. G to G-01 delivered 237,845 tonnes, and G to G-02 delivered 230,039 tonnes, totalling 467,884 tonnes.

The country’s total wheat demand is around 7 million tonnes, while domestic production is about 1 million tonnes. The rest is imported through government and private channels.
