Bihar launches online licensing portal for jaggery units

The Bihar government has launched a fully online licensing system for jaggery (gur) production units, easing the process for farmers and entrepreneurs. Unveiled by Sugarcane Industry Minister Krishna Nandan Paswan, the initiative aims to boost transparency, curb illegal crushers, and support legal operations. Officials say it will modernize farming and promote Bihar’s sugarcane sector globally.

Patna: In a major step towards simplifying the licensing process for jaggery (gur) production units, the Bihar government has made the entire procedure completely online. This move is expected to spare farmers and entrepreneurs from repeatedly visiting government offices, allowing them to check their application status and upload documents from home, reports Live Hindustan.

Sugarcane Industry Minister Krishna Nandan Paswan launched the online licensing portal on Tuesday from his office at the Vikas Bhawan. He said the new digital system is an important initiative aimed at ensuring transparency, convenience, and faster processing for farmers and investors.

Paswan pointed out that at present, the operation of illegal crushers is preventing sugar mills from receiving an adequate supply of sugarcane. The portal, he said, will help address this issue by streamlining licensing and encouraging legal operations.

He added that with the help of modern technology and government support, sugarcane farmers in Bihar will be able to modernize their farming methods and gain recognition at the global level. The minister also announced that the sugarcane research center located in Pusa will be upgraded and developed into a “Centre of Excellence” so that it can become a leading institute for sugarcane research at both national and international levels in the future.

“This center and the digital licensing system represent a fresh beginning for sugarcane farmers in Bihar,” he said.

Sugarcane Commissioner Anil Jha and Joint Commissioner J.P.N. Singh were also present at the event.

State Secretary B. Kartikeya Dhanji emphasized the government’s strong commitment to boosting sugarcane production and related industries. He said the priority is to ensure a smooth and transparent licensing system for farmers and investors, which will ultimately contribute to the economic development of the state.
