Bihar signs MoU with NFCSF to boost sugar industry

Pakistan approves Rs100 billion transfer to austerity fund by Economic Coordination Committee, cutting development spending to manage fuel price risks. Simultaneously, govt reverses policy to procure 1 million tonnes wheat via private sector, aiming to stabilise markets, support farmers, and maintain strategic reserves amid uncertainty.

Patna: In a move aimed at strengthening the sugarcane sector, the state’s Sugarcane Industry Department on Monday entered into an agreement with the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited in New Delhi to promote sugarcane-based industries and increase production across Bihar, The Times of India reported.

The agreement was signed in Patna by Joint Cane Commissioner Jayprakash Narayan Singh and NFCSF Managing Director Prakash Naiknavare during a programme led by Sugarcane Industry Minister Sanjay Kumar.

Calling the agreement a major step forward, the minister said it reflects a strong commitment to the future of farmers, industry and the state’s economy. He noted that while Bihar has strong potential in the sugarcane sector, it continues to face issues such as low output, closure of mills and limited use of modern methods. The new agreement, he said, is designed to turn these challenges into opportunities.

Additional Chief Secretary K Senthil Kumar said the government, under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is working to restart closed sugar mills and establish 25 new ones in the state. He emphasized that increasing sugarcane production is essential to ensure smooth operations of these mills and said efforts are ongoing to improve output.

He also stated that work to revive the Sakri and Raiyam sugar mills is expected to begin this year.

NFCSF Chairman Harshvardhan Patil said the department is moving ahead with plans to fulfil the chief minister’s vision for the sector. He confirmed that detailed project reports for the Sakri and Raiyam mills are already being prepared.

Patil stressed the importance of raising sugarcane production to ensure enough supply for mills across Bihar. He added that advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, will be used more widely to support this goal. He assured that all steps will keep farmers’ interests at the centre, with full support from the federation.

Senior officials and representatives from various mills, including Sidhwalia, Hasanpur and Bagaha, were present at the event.
