Boiler blast in sugar factory: No casualty reported

A boiler explosion occurred early Sunday at Nandi Cooperative Sugar Factory in Krishnanagar, Babaleshwar taluk. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as 15 workers were on a tea break. The blast, occurring during sugarcane crushing preparations, raised concerns among local farmers about sub-standard equipment, previously supplied by a Pune-based firm for Rs 50 crore. A similar incident last year resulted in one death and four injuries. Calls for a high-level inquiry have intensified.

Vijayapura: A boiler exploded in Nandi Cooperative Sugar Factory in Krishnanagar, Babaleshwar taluk in the early hours of Sunday. No one was hurt as all 15 workers, working at the boiler, had gone out for tea.

Sources in the factory said that the boiler blast occurred when preparations were going on to crush sugarcane for the upcoming season.

However, farmers, who feed sugarcane to the factory, gathered at the factory and said a sub-standard boiler was the reason for the blast.

The previous governing body had procured the boiler from an engineering company in Pune. That company never had experience in manufacturing boilers but had installed the boiler at the cost of Rs 50 crore,” they added.

They recalled that a worker died and four had sustained burn injuries in the same factory on March 4, 2023, when another boiler blast took place.

“There is a need for high-level inquiry regarding boiler blasts in the factory,” they pressed.
