Brazil approaches WTO for relief over Trump’s 50% tariffs including sugar

Brazil has approached the WTO after the US, under President Trump, raised tariffs on key Brazilian exports like coffee, beef, and sugar from 10% to 50%. Brazil called the move politically motivated and harmful, affecting 36% of its exports. It seeks resolution through formal WTO consultations.
Brasilia: Brazil on Wednesday approached World Trade Organization regarding trade tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, according to sources within the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, AFP reported.
The move follows the Trump administration’s decision to raise tariffs on several Brazilian exports from 10 per cent to 50 per cent, a measure that took effect Wednesday. The White House said the increase was in response to what Trump described as “a politically motivated attack” on former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently on trial over allegations of attempting to overturn the 2022 election results.
Sources said Brazil has formally requested consultations with the U.S. at the WTO, a required first step in resolving disputes through the organization, as per the news report.
The increased tariffs target major Brazilian exports such as coffee, beef, and sugar. However, some products, including orange juice and civil aircraft, have been excluded from the higher duties, lessening the overall impact.
Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin previously said the new tariffs would affect roughly 36 per cent of Brazil’s exports to the U.S.
In an executive order issued last week, President Trump criticized the Lula administration, accusing it of using criminal proceedings against Bolsonaro for political reasons. The order also raised concerns about Brazil’s digital regulations and claimed that recent actions by the Lula government posed risks to U.S. economic and national interests.
