Brazil : Pace of trades advances in SP; Ethanol prices remain stable
In mid-May, ethanol trades increased in São Paulo and other Central-Southern Brazil states, driven by stronger demand. Buyers aimed for lower prices, but some mills held firm. Favorable weather advanced crushing, boosting supply. Hydrous ethanol prices rose slightly by 0.19%, while anhydrous ethanol saw a 0.76% increase due to high demand and limited supply, especially in the Northeast.
Cepea, May 19, 2025 – Ethanol trades warmed up in São Paulo state in mid-May, since purchasers were more willing to buy the biofuel in practically all states of the Central-Southern Brazil.
Purchasers tried to close trades at lower prices; players from some mills, however, continued firm about the values. Crushing activities advanced a little, favored by the weather conditions, increasing the ethanol supply in some regions.
Between May 5 and 9, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol closed at BRL 2.7236/liter (net of ICMS and PIS/Cofins), upping only 0.19% compared to that in the previous period.
The demand was especially high for anhydrous ethanol in the spot market of São Paulo state and in other producing states, with the delay of the 2025/26 crop beginning in the Central-Southern Brazil. Sales to the Northeast increased, due to the offseason period and the low volume of ethanol available in that region. Thus, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for anhydrous closed at BRL 3.1230/liter from May 5-9, net of taxes (PIS/Cofins), 0.76% up compared to that in the week before.
