Brazil’s sugar production forecast revised down to 43 million tons: USDA

Brazil’s sugarcane production forecast for the 2024-25 marketing year stands at 645 million metric tons, despite heat waves and fire outbreaks. The centre-south region’s output has been reduced by 1.7% to 590 million tons due to adverse weather, while the Northeast region’s production is expected to increase from 44 million to 55 million tons, thanks to favorable conditions. However, Brazil’s total sugar output forecast has been slightly lowered from 44 million to 43 million tons, primarily due to a decline in sugarcane quality.

Brazil experienced extreme weather events in 2024 including an increase in heat waves across various regions. While the full impact of fire outbreaks on sugarcane production remains unclear, officials believe that the damage from these fires is unlikely to significantly affect Brazil’s total sugar output for the 2024-25 marketing year. The country’s forecast for sugarcane production remains at 645 million metric tons.

However, adverse climate conditions in the key sugarcane-growing centre-south region have led to a downward revision of sugarcane production to 590 million tons, a 1.7% decrease.

On a positive note, the forecast for the Northeast region’s production has been revised upward, from 44 million tons to 55 million tons, due to favourable weather that boosted productivity. Despite this, the overall sugar production forecast for 2024/25 has been slightly reduced from 44 million tons to 43 million tons, attributed to a decline in the quality of sugarcane.
