Cabinet approves hike in MSP for 14 kharif crops for 2025-26 season

The Cabinet raised MSPs for 14 kharif crops for 2025–26 to support farmers and encourage diversification. Nigerseed saw the highest hike at ₹820/quintal. Bajra promises the highest return at 63% over production cost. The move aligns with the policy of fixing MSPs at 1.5 times the cost, ensuring better income and promoting sustainable agriculture.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the increase in Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for 14 Kharif crops for the 2025–26 marketing season. The move aims to ensure fair and remunerative prices for farmers while promoting crop diversification.

The highest absolute increase in MSP over the previous year has been recorded for nigerseed (Rs 820 per quintal), followed by ragi (Rs 596), cotton (Rs 589), and sesamum (Rs 579 per quintal).

The MSP revisions are based on a comprehensive cost of production that includes expenses such as human and machine labour, input materials (seeds, fertilizers, irrigation), fuel, depreciation, interest on working capital, and the imputed cost of family labour.

The hike is in line with the 2018-19 Union Budget announcement of fixing MSPs at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production. For the 2025–26 season, bajra is expected to yield the highest return over production cost at 63%, followed by maize (59%), tur (59%), and urad (53%). The remaining crops are expected to offer a 50% return over cost.

To encourage the cultivation of pulses, oilseeds, and nutrient-rich grains (Shree Anna), the government has consistently offered higher MSPs for these crops in recent years.
