Cambodia : Hun Sen urges government to improve irrigation systems to support farmers for agricultural growth

Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen has urged the government to prioritize expanding irrigation systems to boost agricultural productivity and extend crop growing seasons. Speaking at the National Assembly–Senate Congress, he stressed that water supply is a critical issue and essential for increasing rice yields, supporting population growth, and enabling multiple annual harvests to strengthen food security.
Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, has urged the government to intensify efforts to enhance the nation’s irrigation systems, allowing farmers to extend their growing seasons for rice and other crops. He made this statement while continuing to preside over the National Assembly–Senate Congress today.
He emphasised that the most pressing challenge at present is finding effective solutions to supply more water to the agricultural sector—a necessity that cannot be avoided. He stated that expanding irrigation would significantly enhance Cambodia’s agricultural productivity, as both rice and other crops heavily rely on water.
The Senate President stated that “the deep approach is to address water issues, extend the growing season, strengthen agriculture to increase yields, and reduce deforestation as the human population grows.” This represents the concept or agricultural strategy.
He urged the government to work diligently towards extending the planting season. He explained that while one hectare of rice paddy once fed five people, it can now support 10 to 20. However, increasing harvests from one to two or three times a year is crucial and relies heavily on water availability; thus, addressing water issues is essential.
