Ponda: Irked with dilly-dally nature of the state government with regards to the proposed Ethanol unit at the premises of the Sanjivani Sugar Factory at Dayanandnagar, Dharbandora, over hundred sugarcane farmers blocked the Goa-Karnataka national highway on Monday evening.

Initially, the farmers had began their agitation in front of the factory gate. Dharbandora deputy collector Nilesh Dhaigodkar had rushed to the site and had tried to calm the agitating farmers. He sought a period of 15 days to meet the government officials concerned to discuss the issue. However, demanding that they want to know the government’s decision immediately, farmers blocked the road for over 40 minutes.

Assuming that the situation may create law and order issues, Ponda police detained the agitating farmers and lodged them at Collem police station.

Collem PI Sagun Sawant said that all the protesting farmers were later freed.
