Centre approves export of additional 5 LMT sugar
India has approved an additional 5 LMT sugar export quota for 2025–26, raising total permitted exports to 20 LMT to support farmer prices and manage surplus stocks. Mills must export 70% by June 30. The government also cleared 25 LMT wheat and 5 LMT wheat products for export.
Taking a decisive and farmer-centric step to stabilise domestic markets and ensure remunerative returns to producers, the Centre on Friday approved the export of additional 5 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of sugar, the Consumer Affairs Ministry said in a statement.
The statement further said that to facilitate sugar exports, the Government of India has decided to allow the export of an additional 5 LMT of sugar to willing sugar mills during the current Sugar Season 2025–26. Earlier, the government had permitted the export of 15 LMT of sugar during the current season through an order dated November 14, 2025.
As per information furnished by sugar mills, about 1.97 LMT of sugar had been exported as of January 31, 2026. In addition, approximately 2.72 LMT of sugar has been contracted for export by mills so far. The additional export quantity of 5 LMT will be made available to willing sugar mills, subject to the condition that at least 70% of their allocated quantity is exported by June 30, 2026.
The export quota will be allocated on a pro-rata basis among willing sugar mills, which must submit their willingness within 15 days from the date of issuance of the order. The allocated quota cannot be swapped or exchanged with any other sugar mill. The decision is expected to facilitate higher sugar exports and help manage surplus sugar availability in the country.
Along with sugar, the government has also approved the export of 25 LMT of wheat, along with an additional 5 LMT of wheat products.
