Centre has rejected PR-126 trials: Millers

The Punjab Rice Millers Association expressed concern after the central government appeared to sidestep their request for field trials on PR-126 and other hybrid paddy varieties, instead emphasizing lab testing at IIT Kharagpur. Although Union Minister Prahlad Joshi had previously assured rice millers of a prompt resolution, Bharat Bhushan Binta, president of the Punjab Rice Industry Association, noted that the response suggests a continuation of lab-based testing over the field trials they requested.

Chandigarh: Punjab Rice Millers Association on Sunday said it seemed Centre had “indirectly rejected their demand” of field trials for PR-126 and other hybrid varieties of paddy and urged Union food and supplies minister Prahlad Joshi to reconsider the decision.

Bharat Bhushan Binta, president, Punjab Rice Industry Association, said the Centre had indirectly rejected the request of the millers for field trials, which was the main issue raised by the millers at the meeting with the Union minister on Oct 23 in New Delhi.“The minister had assured the delegation of rice millers that they would resolve the issue within four days… However, according to today’s statement, the central govt seems to be focusing on its earlier decision of lab testing at IIT Kharagpur instead of on-ground field trials,” said Binta
