Centre Reinforces Commitment to Farmers with Over 50% MSP and Subsidized Inputs
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan reaffirmed India’s commitment to farmers, ensuring Minimum Support Prices (MSP) at 50% above production costs. He highlighted increased agriculture budgets and subsidies for fertilizers while promoting sustainable farming. Chouhan criticized the previous Congress-led government for neglecting farmers and was honored as “Kisano Ke Laadle” in the Rajya Sabha for his dedication to agricultural development.
11 December 2024, New Delhi: Union Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Minister Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan reiterated the government’s commitment to farmers’ welfare during his recent address in the Rajya Sabha. He highlighted the significant strides made under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership to secure better Minimum Support Prices (MSP) and assured farmers that the Central Government will continue to purchase their crops at MSP. Mr. Chouhan declared that the MSP will be fixed at over 50% of production costs, ensuring that farmers receive profitable returns for their hard work.
While addressing the session, Mr. Chouhan criticized the previous Congress-led government for failing to implement the recommendations of the M.S. Swaminathan Commission and for neglecting farmers’ welfare. “The Congress government denied farmers their due, but under PM Modi’s leadership, MSP rates now guarantee at least 50% profit on production costs. This is our unwavering promise to the farming community,” he stated. Mr. Chouhan reaffirmed that the current government prioritizes the welfare of farmers and has consistently increased the MSP over the past decade.
A Shift Towards Farmer-Centric Governance
Mr. Chouhan emphasized the pivotal changes introduced since 2015 when the ministry was renamed the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. This rebranding, he noted, signaled a shift in priorities to align agriculture policies with the needs of farmers. “The Modi government is committed to transforming agriculture and securing farmers’ incomes. Welfare and development are at the core of our agenda,” he added.
The Union Minister also detailed the unprecedented increase in the agriculture budget, which has grown from ₹21,900 crore in 2013-14 to a staggering ₹1.22 lakh crore in 2023-24. The focus, he explained, is on enhancing productivity, reducing production costs, ensuring fair pricing, compensating losses through schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, and promoting sustainable practices like natural farming.
Honored as “Kisano Ke Laadle”
During the session, Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Mr. Jagdeep Dhankhar affectionately conferred the title of “Kisano Ke Laadle” (Beloved of Farmers) on Mr. Chouhan. Praising his commitment to the farming community, Mr. Dhankhar noted, “You are not just the brother of sisters but also a brother to farmers. Your dedication to their cause reflects the true spirit of your name, Shivraj.” The moment symbolized the trust and respect Mr. Chouhan has garnered from farmers and policymakers alike.
Balancing Subsidies and Sustainable Farming
Mr. Chouhan outlined the government’s dual strategy of providing substantial subsidies to farmers while promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Recently, ₹1.94 lakh crore was allocated for fertilizer subsidies, ensuring farmers’ access to essentials like urea and DAP at affordable rates. “We are providing fertilizers at subsidized rates and have achieved a milestone in offering bags priced at ₹2,100 for much lower costs. This ensures that farmers have timely access to essential inputs,” he said.
Simultaneously, the government is advocating for a gradual shift toward organic and natural farming to address the harmful effects of chemical fertilizers. However, Mr. Chouhan assured that the government remains committed to balancing this transition by continuing to provide subsidized fertilizers to support farmers.
A Roadmap for Agricultural Development
Mr. Chouhan reaffirmed that the Modi government is working with a clear roadmap to enhance the agricultural landscape in India. The sixfold strategy focuses on increasing production, diversifying crops, and ensuring fair compensation for farmers’ efforts. “We are not just helping farmers survive; we are helping them thrive. Our mission is to increase their income so they no longer depend on loan waivers,” he emphasized.
The minister concluded by expressing his dedication to serving the farming community and transforming Indian agriculture. “With PM Modi’s vision and my commitment, we will leave no stone unturned to improve farmers’ lives and achieve our developmental goals,” he said.
