China plans to harvest 725 mln tons of grain in 2026

China is targeting grain production of about 725 million tonnes in 2026 to strengthen food security amid global market volatility. Premier Li Qiang highlighted the plan at the National People’s Congress. Despite being the world’s largest grain producer, China continues to import key crops to meet strong domestic demand and ensure stable supplies. 🌾

China aims to secure grain production at around 725 million tons in 2026, potentially reaching one of the highest levels in the country’s history. The target was outlined in a government report presented at the 4th session of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC).

The report was delivered by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who emphasized the importance of stabilizing food production and strengthening the country’s food security amid volatility in global agricultural markets.

According to the document, total grain production capacity is expected to reach about 725 million tons this year. At the same time, the country’s total annual energy production capacity is projected to reach 5.8 billion tons of standard coal equivalent.

China remains the world’s largest grain producer. However, due to strong domestic demand, the country continues to import significant volumes of certain crops, particularly soybeans, corn, and wheat. Increasing domestic production is therefore viewed as a key element of China’s long-term food security strategy.
