China plans to increase grain production capacity by 50 mln tons

China is intensifying efforts to boost its grain production capacity by 50 million tonnes, focusing on corn and soybean expansion. The plan aims to modernize agriculture, protect arable land, improve efficiency, and strengthen food security. Rising feed demand and dependence on soybean imports make domestic output growth a top priority for long-term stability.

China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has announced intensified efforts to expand the country’s grain production capacity by around 50 million tonnes, with a particular focus on boosting corn and soybean output, according to Global Times.

The move is aimed at accelerating the modernization of China’s agriculture and rural areas. Key objectives include strengthening overall agricultural production capacity, improving quality and efficiency, and ensuring stable and secure supplies of grain and other essential agricultural products.

In addition to prioritizing higher corn and soybean production, the NDRC said it will also expand output of high-quality feed crops, including silage corn and alfalfa, as well as specialized and high-quality crop varieties.

The plan also emphasizes strict protection of arable land, balanced land use, and better coordination and compensation mechanisms to support the optimization of agricultural land use.

According to the NDRC, demand for feed grain continues to grow, with corn and soybeans forming its backbone. At the same time, domestic soybean supply remains insufficient, making China highly dependent on imports. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics show that in 2025 China’s corn production reached 301.2 million tonnes, while soybean output totaled 23.9 million tonnes.
