China resumes purchasing US wheat after a year-long hiatus

China is showing renewed interest in US wheat purchases for December–February shipments after more than a year of minimal buying. This comes following a recent trade easing between Washington and Beijing, including China lifting tariffs on US wheat. Chicago wheat rose 1.8% on the news. Purchases had previously slowed due to China’s high stocks and weak demand.

After more than a year of delays, China has expressed interest in purchasing US wheat. According to Bloomberg sources familiar with the matter, one of China’s major grain importers has inquired about US wheat for shipments between December and February. This comes amid the trade truce reached between Washington and Beijing last week.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), China last purchased American wheat in early October 2024. Last week, the country resumed purchasing American soybeans, signaling a gradual improvement in agricultural relations between the world’s two leading economies. On this news, wheat prices in Chicago rose 1.8% on Monday, reaching their highest level since July.

According to information released by the White House, China has agreed to open its market to American agricultural products and lift tariffs on US wheat imports imposed in March. This agreement follows a meeting in South Korea between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The Chinese side also confirmed reaching a consensus on expanding agricultural trade with Washington, but has not yet disclosed details. It is expected that market opening steps could be part of a broader trade agreement aimed at reducing tensions in bilateral economic relations.

Interest in American wheat has arisen amid a sharp decline in Chinese imports of the grain. In the first nine months of 2025, purchase volumes fell more than threefold compared to the same period in 2024, as Beijing focused on supporting domestic prices due to weak demand and significant inventories.
