China to increase grain imports this season
China is set to raise grain imports this season, USDA FAS forecasts, driven by poor domestic grain quality. Corn imports may jump to 8 mt, wheat to 6 mt, barley to 10.5 mt, and sorghum to 7.6 mt, with sorghum replacing costlier feed grains.
The Foreign Agricultural Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (FAS USDA) forecasts that China will increase grain imports this season.
Corn imports will increase to 8.0 million tons (1.8 million tons last season), wheat to 6.0 million tons (4.2 million tons), barley to 10.5 million tons (10.3 million tons), and sorghum to 7.6 million tons (5.5 million tons).
Due to the insufficient quality of grain harvested by Chinese farmers this season, China will be forced to increase imports of high-quality wheat and corn. Imported sorghum will be used by Chinese processors to replace other, more expensive feed crops.
