Civil Aviation Authority of China announces formation of country’s first technical centre for sustainable aviation fuel
The Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) has inaugurated its first technical center for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Chengdu. This center will spearhead SAF standardization, product research, and policy development, aiming to establish a Chinese certification framework. With China’s aviation fuel demand projected to surpass 50 million metric tonnes by 2030, SAF is expected to contribute up to 2.5 million tonnes, derived from renewable waste and residues.
According to news report by Reuters, the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) has launched the country’s inaugural technical center dedicated to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), focusing on standardization and product research.
Located in Chengdu, the new center will lead in formulating industry policies, establishing standards for products, and ensuring quality control. CAAC’s objective includes the creation of a Chinese certification framework for sustainable fuels.
The center is currently in the process of developing testing facilities for new products, as reported on the regulator’s news site. It is anticipated that China’s aviation fuel consumption will exceed 50 million metric tonnes annually by 2030, with SAF potentially accounting for up to 2.5 million tonnes yearly. SAF can be derived from sustainably sourced renewable waste and residues such as used cooking oil, animal fat waste, or through processes involving renewable power-based hydrogen.
