Cong govt keen to give all essentials commodities
The Congress government in Hyderabad plans to extend subsidized supplies beyond rice for white ration card holders. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy aims to reintroduce essential commodities like oil, sugar, and spices through fair price shops due to escalating prices. Currently, only rice is available. The decision on commodities and new ration card designs will be made post Lok Sabha polls, with discussions slated after June 4 due to election regulations.
Hyderabad: The Congress govt has decided to supply other essential commodities too at a subsidised rate, in addition to only rice being supplied to lakhs of white ration card holders through fair price shops in the state.
Previously, the YSR-led Congress govt in the undivided state used to give 9 essential commodities including rice, edible oil, sugar, salt, turmeric and tamarind among others through fair price shops.
However, the supply of these commodities was gradually discontinued after the BRS came to power in the state Presently, only rice is being supplied through fair price shops. Chief minister A Revanth Reddy has evinced interest in supplying other essential commodities too to white ration card holders through ration shops keeping in view of the rising prices. Meanwhile, the Congress govt is already
providing domestic gas cylinders at 500 and free electricity up to 200 units to poor families in the state. The Revanth-led-govt will take a decision on the commodities to be given through fair price shops at subsidised rate after Lok Sabha polls. Ration cards with a new look are also on the anvil as Congress govt has decided to make issuance of new ration cards to those in need.
Civil supplies minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy told TOI that neither design of the new ration card nor the number of other essential commodities to be provided have been finalised so far. “Now, the election code is in force and we will discuss these issues and finalise it only after June 4 when the poll code ends,” he added.
