Corn ethanol production continues to grow in Brazil
Brazil’s UNICA reported a surge in ethanol production and sales in late January, with 96% of production coming from corn. Sugarcane processing dropped 66.28% year-over-year, while total ethanol output rose 3.43% for the current harvest season. Hydrous ethanol saw a 9.84% increase, while anhydrous ethanol declined 6.14%. Corn ethanol production jumped 31.23%. Ethanol sales in January were up 2.07%, driven by higher domestic demand.
UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has reported that ethanol production was up during the second half of January with more than 96% of production coming from corn. Ethanol sales were also up for the full month.
Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 239,370 tons of sugarcane during the second half of January, down 66.28% when compared to the same period of last year. Total sugarcane harvesting since the beginning of the current harvest season, which began April 1, 2024, is down 4.93% when compared to the previous harvest season.
Mills in the region produced 401.8 million liters (106.14 million gallons) of ethanol during the second half of January. Production included 237.5 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 8.79%, and 164.3 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 73.97%. Corn ethanol accounted for 387.67 million liters, or 96.49% of total production during the period, up 38.4% when compared to the same two-week period of 2023.
Total ethanol production since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 33.19 billion liters, up 3.43%. Production included 21.11 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 9.84%, and 12.08 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 6.14%. Corn ethanol production accounted for 6.78 billion liters, up 31.23%.
Mills in the south-central region sold 3.06 billion liters of ethanol in January, up 2.07% when compared to the same month of 2023. Domestic sales included 1.83 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 3.9%, and 1.09 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 5.34%.
Total sales since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 29.83 billion liters, up 10.73%. Sales included 19.21 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 18.18%, and 10.62 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 0.6%.
