Corn leads U.S. grain export inspections with strong shipments to Mexico and Japan

U.S. corn exports are surging, with inspections for the week ending October 2 at 1.6 million tons, mainly to Mexico and Japan, up sharply from last year. Wheat shipments are also faster due to competitive prices, while soybean exports lag from weaker Chinese demand. Sorghum exports remain modest but rising.

Corn continues to leave U.S. ports at a rapid pace. The USDA says corn export inspections during the week ending October 2nd were up sharply on the year, mainly to Mexico and Japan, reflecting the strong global demand thanks to favorable prices. Just over a month into the current marketing year, corn inspections are running well ahead of last year’s pace. That’s in contrast to soybean inspections, which continue to trail the previous marketing year due to the lack of demand from China because of tariff tensions. Wheat inspections were above a week ago and shipments are faster than a year ago, helped out by competitive prices.

The 2025/26 marketing year began June 1st for wheat and September 1st for beans, corn, and sorghum.

The USDA’s weekly export sales report and monthly supply and demand estimates have been delayed by the ongoing partial shutdown of the federal government.

Wheat came out at 505,096 tons, down 368,482 from the week ending September 25th, but up 140,313 from the week ending October 3rd, 2024. The main destinations were South Korea and Japan. In the second quarter of the 2025/26 marketing year, wheat inspections are 10,177,281 tons, compared to 8,649,281 in 2024/25.

Corn was reported at 1,599,941 tons, 60,684 higher than the previous week and 651,754 above a year ago. The top destinations were Mexico and Japan. For the marketing year to date, corn inspections are 6,708,744 tons, compared to 4,298,920 this time last year.

Soybeans were pegged at 768,117 tons, 157,484 more than the prior week, but 857,530 less than last year. The leading destinations were Mexico and Egypt. So far, this marketing year, soybean inspections are 3,030,898 tons, compared to 3,555,417 a year ago.

Sorghum totaled 33,245 tons, an increase of 32,707 on the week and 30,385 on the year. The listed destinations were Italy and Japan. 2025/26 sorghum inspections are 100,384 tons, compared to 335,751 in 2024/25.
