CVR Energy to explore sustainable aviation fuel projects
CVR Energy Inc.’s renewable diesel unit at the Wynnewood refinery in Oklahoma processed 11.7 million gallons of vegetable oil in Q2, down from 17.8 million gallons last year due to turnaround and catalyst replacement. Despite this, the feedstock pretreatment unit is now operating at planned rates, with improved yield and economics. CVR is exploring a shift to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, with discussions ongoing for a potential conversion at Wynnewood and a development plan for a larger renewables project at Coffeyville refinery in Kansas.
On July 29, CVR Energy Inc. reported that its renewable diesel unit at the Wynnewood refinery in Oklahoma processed nearly 12 million gallons of feedstock in the second quarter. The company is also exploring a shift towards sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, reported Biomass Magazine.
CVR noted that the renewable diesel unit at Wynnewood processed approximately 11.7 million gallons of vegetable oil during the second quarter, down from 17.8 million gallons in the same period last year. This decline is mainly due to the refinery’s turnaround and a catalyst replacement at the renewable diesel unit in the spring of 2024, along with downtime caused by a fire in April.
During the second quarter earnings call on July 30, CVR Energy CEO David Lamp reported that the feedstock pretreatment unit is currently operating at its planned rates. He mentioned that the company is seeing improved renewable diesel yield and better economics at current market prices.
Lamp confirmed that discussions are ongoing about the potential conversion of Wynnewood’s renewable diesel to 100% SAF. He also mentioned that a development plan for a larger renewables project at CVR’s Coffeyville refinery in Kansas is expected within the next few months. Lamp reiterated that CVR is confident in the future market for both renewable diesel and SAF.
