DA adds Laguna, Cavite sites for P29/kg rice program
The Department of Agriculture (DA) is expanding its P29/kg rice program to include new sites in Laguna and Cavite, reaching 15 locations. Genevieve Guevarra, DA assistant secretary, emphasized the program’s careful expansion to maximize impact on vulnerable Filipinos. The subsidized rice is now available in cities like San Pedro and Bacoor, and at various government offices and localities. The program targets 6.9 million households, including indigents and senior citizens, offering rice at a reduced price on weekends.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) added two more sites, one in Laguna and another in Cavite for the rollout of the P29 per kilogram (kg) rice program for the vulnerable sector.
Genevieve Guevarra, DA assistant secretary for consumer and legislative affairs, said the rapid expansion of the subsidized rice program is a well considered action.
“We’re progressing ahead of schedule but with careful planning to maximize the program’s impact on disadvantaged Filipinos,” Guevarra said.
DA said the P29 per kg rice program will also now be available in 15 sites including the cities of San Pedro, Laguna and Bacoor, Cavite,
Currently, the product is available at the offices of the Bureau of Animal Industry and National Irrigation Administration in Quezon City; Bureau of Plant Industry in Manila; Food Terminal Inc. in Taguig City; Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority in Las Pinas; Caloocan City; Valenzuela City; barangays Fortune and BF City in Marikina City; San Jose del Monte City in Bulacan; Malabon; Navotas; and Nangka, Marikina
“Other local government units are requesting that Kadiwa bring the P29 rice program to their areas but we have to do this on a calibrated manner. We want to ensure this program succeeds to extend its benefits to the most number of vulnerable Filipino households,” Guevarra said.
As currently crafted, the program is intended to sell good quality rice at P29 a kg to disadvantaged sectors such as indigents from the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino program, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, solo parents and indigenous people which are are estimated to total 6.9 million households or around 34 million Filipinos.
The program also sells the subsidized rice to the marginalized sector every Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
