E30 boost: Brazil increases ethanol and biodiesel fuel mandates
Starting August 1, Brazil will raise the ethanol blend in gasoline from 27% to 30% and biodiesel in diesel from 14% to 15%, aiming to cut fuel costs, reduce emissions, and support domestic biofuels. Approved under the Fuel of the Future Law, the move is expected to make Brazil self-sufficient in gasoline for the first time in 15 years.
The Brazilian government on Wednesday announced that it will raise the mandatory blend of ethanol in gasoline from 27% to 30% and the mandatory blend of biodiesel in diesel from 14% to 15%, starting August 1.
The decision was issued by the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE), part of the Ministry of Mines and Energy. The updated blending requirements are intended to reduce reliance on gasoline imports, lower emissions, cut fuel costs, and support the domestic biofuels industry.
Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira also said that the change in the biofuels mandate would make Brazil “gasoline self-sufficient for the first time in 15 years.”
Earlier, in March, the Ministry of Mines and Energy announced that tests conducted by the Mauá Institute of Technology confirmed both the safety and technical viability of the new fuel blends. These findings allow for immediate implementation without negative impacts on vehicles or consumers.
The E30 tests were part of the rollout of Brazil’s Fuel of the Future Law, enacted in 2024, which provides a framework for decarbonizing and modernizing the country’s energy sources. Under this law, ethanol content in gasoline can be raised up to 35%, provided technical feasibility is demonstrated.
