Edible Oils: IVPA demands from the government to restore the standard pack size for edible oils, know what it means.

The Indian Vegetable Oil Producers Association (IVPA) has urged the government to reinstate standard pack sizes for edible oils, citing consumer confusion from non-standard packaging. Despite mandatory Unit Selling Price rules, IVPA says variations in pack sizes mislead buyers and hinder fair price comparisons. Standardisation would boost transparency, fair trade, and consumer trust in everyday purchases.
The Indian Vegetable Oil Producers Association (IVPA) has urged the government to restore standardised pack sizes for edible oils. In a media statement, it has described this as an important step to ensure transparency, restore normalcy in the market and protect consumer interests.
The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2021 have made the declaration of Unit Selling Price (USP) mandatory. Subsequently, through an amendment, the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2022 removed Schedule II, which mandated commodities to be packed in specific quantities, thus flooding the market with non-standardised packaging.
The aim of this initiative was to allow producers to use the packaging of their choice. It was hoped that the market would soon stabilise and non-standard packaging would be rejected due to consumers’ awareness of unit selling price.
The IVPA statement said that consumers are now faced with a plethora of brand and pack options that look similar but differ in quantity, leading to confusion. Sometimes, even price misperceptions are created. Despite the presence of USP, small differences in net weight often go unnoticed, reducing the effectiveness of this safety measure in everyday decision-making.
Edible oil is a household essential and packaging needs to be clear and consistent. Standardised packaging ensures that price comparisons are simple, transparent and fair. It provides a level playing field for both consumers and producers, thereby fostering trust and long-term brand value, the statement said.
IVPA urged that reintroduction of standard pack sizes (range like 5 kg, 2 kg, 1 kg, 500 gm, 200 gm or any other smaller pack size) would be a constructive step towards strengthening the consumer ecosystem. IVPA termed this move as in line with the Government’s broader goals of transparency, fair trade practices and consumer empowerment.
