EGYPT : SCZONE And JETRO Explore Green Hydrogen Opportunities In Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone
SCZONE Chairman Waleid Gamal El-Dien met with Japan’s JETRO delegation to discuss Egypt’s efforts to localize green hydrogen production. SCZONE, with investments in infrastructure and renewable energy, aims to be a global green fuel hub. The zone has already exported green ammonia and offers incentives to attract investors. The meeting emphasized partnerships, with Egypt’s rich renewable energy resources playing a key role.
The Chairman of the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), Mr. Waleid Gamal El-Dien, welcomed a delegation from the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) at SCZONE’s headquarters in Sokhna. The meeting, attended by representatives of major international companies involved in green hydrogen production and SCZONE leadership, focused on Egypt’s efforts to localize the green hydrogen industry, aligning with the national strategy for transitioning to a green economy.
During the meeting, Mr. Waleid Gamal El-Dien highlighted the significant steps SCZONE has taken to become a hub for green hydrogen and renewable energy industries. He noted that SCZONE has made substantial investments in infrastructure, including the construction of desalination plants and world-class facilities to support green fuel production.
“SCZONE is determined to position itself as a green fuel hub through practical initiatives such as the Egypt Green Hydrogen project, which began production just 10 months after being announced at the COP27 Summit,” stated Mr. Gamal El-Dien. He also announced that Egypt successfully exported its first shipment of green ammonia to India in November 2023, and secured a contract worth 400 million euros to supply renewable ammonia to the European Union.
SCZONE’s chairman also emphasized the economic incentives offered to attract global investors, especially within the green fuel and automotive sectors. These include lower operating costs and special incentives provided by the Egyptian government under the National Automotive Strategy, aimed at increasing local manufacturing in the automotive industry.
The meeting also included a Q&A session with representatives of green hydrogen companies, during which Mr. Gamal El-Dien stressed SCZONE’s openness to partnerships. He pointed to the recent incentives announced by the Egyptian government for green fuel projects, reinforcing SCZONE’s role as a leader in the sector. He also highlighted Egypt’s rich renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy, which are critical for scaling up green fuel production.
Following the meeting, the JETRO delegation toured the Sokhna integrated zone, where they visited several key industrial sites related to green fuel production. They also toured Sokhna Port, the largest hub port on the Red Sea, which has undergone extensive development to accommodate increased trading volumes and handle a variety of vessels.
The collaboration between SCZONE and JETRO underscores the growing international interest in Egypt’s green hydrogen initiatives, positioning the Suez Canal Economic Zone as a key player in the global transition towards renewable energy.
