Egypt to produce jet fuel from recycled vegetable oil

Egypt has launched its first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project, signing a production license with Honeywell UOP. A new Alexandria plant will convert waste cooking oil into 120,000 t/year of SAF, cutting CO₂ emissions by 400,000 t annually. Officials call it a strategic step toward cleaner energy and aviation decarbonization.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced that Egypt has taken a major step towards decarbonizing its aviation sector by launching its first-ever project to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from waste vegetable oil.

The Ministry signed a production license agreement between the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM), through the newly established Egyptian Sustainable Aviation Fuel Company, and Honeywell UOP.

The signing was attended by ECHEM Chairman Ibrahim Makki and Khaled Hashem, President and CEO of Honeywell Middle East and Africa.

Following the ceremony, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi stated that this initiative marks a significant moment for Egypt’s energy sector. He added that the project directly contributes to the country’s broader transition to greener energy solutions and aims to reduce aviation-related carbon emissions by supplying clean and sustainable aviation fuel.

“This is the first project of its kind in Egypt and a new step toward aligning the oil sector with national climate change goals,” Badawi said. “It is both an environmental breakthrough and an economic opportunity.”

The planned plant in Alexandria will convert waste cooking oil into environmentally friendly aviation fuel. The plant’s design capacity will be 120,000 tons per year. According to the ministry, the plant could help reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 400,000 tons per year, making it one of the most efficient green energy projects currently underway in the country.

Badawi emphasized that SAF production is among the ministry’s top priorities due to its strong commercial potential and central role in global efforts to decarbonize air travel.

Honeywell’s Khaled Hashem emphasized the strategic nature of the partnership, describing it as a reflection of mutual trust and a shared commitment to implementing advanced low-carbon technologies.

“Honeywell is committed to leveraging its global expertise to support Egypt in producing sustainable aviation fuel that meets the highest international standards,” Hashem said, noting that the project strengthens regional momentum toward cleaner aviation fuel.
