EIA: Ethanol and biodiesel capacity expand in January, renewable diesel capacity falls
U.S. biofuel capacity showed mixed trends in January, with total capacity slightly declining month-on-month but rising year-on-year to 25.24 billion gallons. Ethanol and biodiesel capacities saw modest monthly gains, while renewable diesel dropped over 2%, highlighting shifting dynamics within the biofuels sector.
U.S. operable ethanol and biodiesel production capacity expanded slightly in January, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on March 31. Renewable diesel capacity fell by more than 2% when compared to December.
Total biofuels capacity was at 25.241 billion gallons per year in January, down 82 MMgy when compared to the previous month, but up 251 MMgy when compared to January 2025.
Ethanol capacity reached 18.386 billion gallons per year in January, up 35 MMgy when compared to December, but down 40 MMgy when compared to the same month of the previous year.
Biodiesel capacity reached 1.963 billion gallons per year in January, up 5 MMgy when compared to the previous month, but down 21 MMgy when compared to January 2025.
Capacity for renewable diesel and associated fuels, defined to include renewable heating oil, renewable jet fuel, renewable naphtha, renewable gasoline and other biofuels and biointermediates, fell to 4.892 billion gallons per year in January, down 122 MMgy when compared to December, but up 312 MMgy when compared to January 2025.
