Police officers in Uasin Gishu have impounded a consignment of bhang and hundreds of litres of ethanol with a street value of Sh3 million at an incomplete residential house on the outskirts of Eldoret town.

The consignments which had been loaded into two lorries, were being transported to various markets in Trans Nzoia, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.

County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi said his officers who were conducting normal patrols on the busy Eldoret-Webuye highway, came across the businessmen involved in the illegal trade at an incomplete house in Roadblock estate.

The officers arrested the suspects as they were preparing to transport the goods to their customers in various towns of Eldoret, Iten, Kapsabet and Kitale

“Our officers managed to arrest seven people in connection with the seized consignment of bhang and suspected ethanol. They are currently being held at Baharini police station pending their arraignment in court after we are through with investigations,” he said.

Mwanthi who was accompanied by County Director of Criminal Investigations Daniel Muleli, said the arrest follows a tip off from members of the public.

“Let me thank members of the public for sharing crucial information that led to the success of this operation, where we managed to seize  bhang and suspected ethanol.”

He further said lorries that were being used to transport the goods have also been impounded at Baharini police station.

“My officers are on high alert to ensure we bring to an end the illegal business of drug trafficking that has started to resurface in the region, to save the lives of our youths. Police managed to intercept the consignment at supply stage before it reached the targeted markets,” he said.

He said they have beefed up security along the busy Eldoret-Nakuru, Eldoret-Webuye and Eldoret-Kitale highways to ensure narcotics are not sneaked into the county from the neighbouring areas.
