Elephant ‘sugarcane tax’ disrupts traffic on Chachoengsao highway
At home, your dogs may demand a cheese tax in the kitchen, but in Chachoengsao, wild elephants are staking out on the road, collecting a sugarcane tax from passing trucks!
.
Spotted blocking Highway 3076 (formerly 3259) in Chachoengsao, the elephants target trucks carrying sugarcane and cassava. Standing in the middle of the road, they wait for vehicles to pass and then casually stretch their trunks to grab a sugarcane for a snack.
.
Sanctuary officials have issued warnings to drivers, urging them to maintain a speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour. If they encounter elephants, drivers are advised to stop and avoid revving engines, honking or flashing lights, as these actions may provoke the animals. They are urged to only proceed once the elephants have made their way back to the jungle. Officials also stress the importance of not feeding wildlife.
.
This unusual behaviour does not just highlight the adaptability of these majestic creatures but also underscores the need for responsible measures to ensure the safety of both humans and animals.
