Erex to expand biomass operations in Vietnam

Erex Group plans to expand its biomass activities in Vietnam, focusing on building and converting biomass power plants in collaboration with the government. The company is developing resilient renewable energy sources, including fast-growing, low-emission sorghum as a biomass fuel. Erex is targeting central and southern Vietnam for sorghum cultivation due to accessibility and lower competition with food crops.

Erex Group has announced plans to broaden its biomass activities in Vietnam, where it has already made significant investments. The company is involved with Hau Giang Bio Energy, a firm set up specifically to develop and manage biomass power plants.

In collaboration with the Vietnamese government, erex aims to drive the construction of new biomass power plants, convert existing plants to biomass, and advance the development of biomass fuels across the country.

“We are committed to contributing to the economic growth of developing nations and advancing global decarbonization efforts. This initiative will also foster the development of diverse biomass fuels, helping to establish resilient renewable energy sources,” said a spokesperson for erex.

One of the new fuels being explored is a type of sorghum, selected for its rapid growth and low-cost cultivation. erex highlighted that the greenhouse gas emissions throughout the sorghum’s lifecycle—covering cultivation, processing, transportation, and power generation—are significantly lower than those associated with coal.

In choosing suitable locations for sorghum cultivation, erex is focusing on regions with easy access to international ports for export to Japan, areas with low competition for food crops, and regions where farmers have relatively low incomes. The company is also prioritizing areas in central and southern Vietnam that are less prone to typhoons and where acquiring farmland for large-scale agriculture is feasible.
