Ethanol blending helped India save imports of 4.5 crore barrels of oil: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India’s ethanol blending push has helped cushion the impact of the ongoing West Asia conflict on energy supplies. Ethanol blending in petrol has risen from about 1% to nearly 20% in a decade, reducing oil imports and strengthening energy security.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India’s push towards ethanol blending has helped the country manage the impact of the ongoing West Asia conflict on energy supplies.
Addressing Parliament, he said the country’s efforts over the past decade to increase ethanol production and blending are now yielding results. He noted that ethanol blending in petrol has risen from about one percent ten years ago to nearly 20 percent at present.
He said this progress has reduced India’s dependence on imported oil, adding that the country imported around 4.5 crore fewer barrels of oil last year due to ethanol blending.
The Prime Minister said the government has also taken steps to promote cleaner transport, including the allocation of 15,000 electric buses to states as part of efforts to adopt alternative fuels.
Referring to the ongoing tensions in West Asia, he said the region remains a key source of global energy and that the government is working to limit the impact of supply disruptions.
He added that energy remains central to economic growth and said the country’s economic fundamentals remain strong despite global uncertainties.
