Ethanol boost: Jakson Green wins NTPC order for setting up project to produce 4G ethanol from flue gas

Jakson Green announced securing an order from NTPC to establish a plant in Lara, Chhattisgarh, producing 4G ethanol from power plant flue gas emissions. The plant will utilize Veolia Carbon Clean technology to capture 25 TPD of CO2 and generate 3 TPD of green hydrogen via a 7.5 MW electrolyser. LanzaTech Inc.’s microbial fermentation technology will convert CO2 and hydrogen into ethanol, marking India’s first flue gas CO2-to-4G ethanol project, set to start in two years.

Jakson Green announced on Wednesday that it has secured an order from state-owned NTPC  to establish a plant at Lara, Chhattisgarh, aimed at producing 4G ethanol from flue gas emissions.

According to a company statement, the proposed plant will have a capacity to produce 10 tonnes per day (TPD) of 4G ethanol from flue gases emitted from power plants. It will employ advanced carbon capture technology from Veolia Carbon Clean to capture 25 TPD CO2 from the flue gases, thereby significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally, the plant will generate 3 tonnes per day of green hydrogen through a 7.5 MW electrolyser, the statement added.

The captured CO2 and generated hydrogen will undergo advanced microbial fermentation technology from LanzaTech Inc., converting these inputs into 4G ethanol. This project marks a pioneering initiative in India towards a greener future, establishing the world’s first flue gas CO2-to-4G ethanol project for a power plant.

Jakson Green, appointed as the licensing, engineering, procurement, and construction (LEPC) partner, will lead the project, slated to commence operations within two years. The plant’s concept and design were developed by NETRA (NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance), the research and development arm of NTPC Ltd.

Kannan Krishnan, Joint Managing Director of Jakson Green Private Limited said, “”This partnership builds upon the success of our numerous joint projects… Increasing the production of ethanol is crucial to achieving India’s blending goals, strengthening energy security, and fostering a cleaner future”

Jakson Green is currently advancing production capacities of over 8,500 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen and its derivatives across six projects. This positions the company uniquely to drive India’s transition to clean energy and contribute to sustainable development.
