EU soybean oil imports have increased by 189% since the start of the season.


EU imports of oilseeds and vegetable oils in 2025/26 are lower than last year, reflecting higher domestic production. Soybean imports fell 4% to 2.86 million tonnes, rapeseed 35%, and sunflower seeds 41%. Soybean oil imports rose sharply to 190,000 tonnes, while palm and sunflower oil imports declined.
EU imports of oilseeds and vegetable oils in the 2025/26 marketing year are overall lower than last year, reflecting expected growth in domestic oilseed production and processing, according to European Commission data .
As of 21 September, soybean imports by the EU27 in 2025/26 (starting on 1 July) amounted to approximately 2.86 million tonnes, down 4% on the same period last year and 4% less than the week before.
Rapeseed imports amounted to approximately 790 thousand tons, which is 35% less than a year earlier and 42% less than a week earlier, and sunflower seed imports amounted to approximately 60 thousand tons, which is 41% less year-on-year and 40% less than a week earlier.
Regarding vegetable oils, soybean oil imports showed significant growth, reaching 190,000 tonnes, up 189% year-on-year and 173% higher than the previous week. Soybean meal imports totaled 4.01 million tonnes, down 4% year-on-year. EU countries imported 360,000 tonnes of sunflower oil, down 21% from the previous year.
Palm oil was the largest quantity purchased – 600 thousand tons, which is, nevertheless, 25% less than the previous year.
It was previously reported that sunflower processing in the EU has declined significantly this season, while soybean processing, on the contrary, has risen to a three-year high. Due to strong demand, analysts expect further price increases for the product.
