Exports of grain and oil crops from the EU decreased sharply in 2025/26

EU grain and oilseed exports fell sharply in MY 2025/26 due to harvest delays and a stronger euro. Wheat exports dropped 58%, corn 67%, and oilseed exports 36%. Romania led wheat exports; the Netherlands dominated vegetable oil shipments. Ukrainian corn and wheat filled some gaps, easing EU import needs.

The delay in harvesting and the rise in the euro against the dollar sharply reduced export supplies of grains, oilseeds, and processed products from the EU in the new season, which is increasing pressure on prices in the EU and on export prices in Ukraine.

According to the European Commission, in the MY 2025/26, exports of major crops from the EU decreased compared to the corresponding period of the previous year:

  • soft wheat – by 58% to 1.11 million tons,
  • barley – by 13% to 950.17 thousand tons,
  • corn – by 67% to 36.86 thousand tons.

The leader in soft wheat exports from the EU is Romania (740.14 thousand tons), followed by Germany (126.23 thousand tons), Bulgaria (95.7 thousand tons), Poland (82.4 thousand tons), Lithuania (slightly more than 39 thousand tons), while France did not export wheat during this period.

At the same time, the EC materials note that data on grain exports from France are incomplete from the beginning of the 2024 calendar year, and from Bulgaria and Ireland from the beginning of the 2023–2024 marketing year. The main buyers of wheat from the EU in the MY 2025/26 were:

  • Saudi Arabia (137 thousand tons),
  • Nigeria (128.84 thousand tons),
  • Algeria (93.8 thousand tons),
  • Great Britain (79.6 thousand tons),
  • Vietnam (61 thousand tons).

From July 1 to August 3, Ukraine supplied the European Union with 222.4 thousand tons of corn, 50.42 thousand tons of soft wheat, and 3.1 thousand tons of durum wheat.

Since the beginning of the MY 2025/26 (as of August 3), EU countries have reduced oilseed exports compared to the corresponding period of the previous season by 36% to 28.09 thousand tons, in particular:

  • rapeseed – by 70% to 6.01 thousand tons,
  • sunflower – by 40% to 11.7 thousand tons.

At the same time, soybean exports increased by 145% to 10.4 thousand tons.

In the new season, Hungary became the leader in oilseed exports from the EU, supplying 5.8 thousand tons of soybeans, 0.2 thousand tons of sunflowers, and 0.03 thousand tons of rapeseed to foreign markets.

Exports of meal from the EU during the specified period decreased by 24% to 108.2 thousand tons, in particular:

  • soybean – by 30% to 33.15 thousand tons,
  • rapeseed – by 30% to 51.2 thousand tons,
  • sunseed – by 10% to 23.8 thousand tons.

Oil exports also decreased by 35% to 107.7 thousand tons, in particular:

  • sunseed – by 39% to 41.7 thousand tons,
  • rapeseed – by 28% to 47.9 thousand tons,
  • soybeans – by 62% to 22 thousand tons.
