Farmers: Mills take away cane illegally
Madurai: Sugarcane farmers have complained that private sugar mills are cutting and taking away sugarcane registered under National Cooperative Sugar Mills, Alanganallur, which is illegal. The issue was raised at the farmers’ grievance redressal meeting at the collector’s office on Friday.
Tamil Nadu Sugarcane Farmers’ Association state deputy president N Palanisamy said private sugar mills took away sugarcane without obtaining permission from the cooperative mill.
The farmers were even paid incentives for supplying sugarcane and it will severely affect the prospects of the cooperative mill in future, he said. District collector M S Sangeetha asked officials from the sugarcane development department to investigate the allegation.
The farmers also raised issues like water bodies being encroached in the district which was affecting agriculture. Paddy farmers urged the district administration to open a permanent paddy procurement centre in the Thirumangalam region. However, the collector clarified that a permanent centre would result in traders misusing it to sell paddy they procure at cheaper rates from farmers. Hence, only temporary procurement centre can be opened during harvest seasons to procure paddy from farmers.
