Farmers’ union demands hike in sugarcane prices to over Rs 450 per quintal
BKU spokesperson Rakesh Tikait criticized the BJP government for neglecting farmers by not increasing sugarcane prices, demanding a hike from ₹370 to over ₹450 per quintal. He advocated for fair pricing based on Swaminathan Committee recommendations and an MSP Guarantee Law for other crops. Tikait also opposed UPPCL’s privatization, citing potential burdens on consumers and workers, and called for farmer debt waivers to address financial hardships. He accused the government of prioritizing capitalist interests over farmers’ welfare.
Agra: Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) spokesperson Rakesh Tikait, during a press conference in Muzaffarnagar on Saturday, criticised the BJP govt for its failure to increase sugarcane prices and its plans to privatise the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL). He demanded a hike in sugarcane prices from the current Rs 370 per quintal to over Rs 450 per quintal, arguing that farmers are being neglected in the face of rising inflation.”Why is the price of sugarcane not being increased?” Tikait questioned. “Inflation rises every year, allowances increase, but crop prices remain stagnant. Capitalists have taken control of the political system and are running it to serve their own interests.”
He emphasised that fair pricing, as recommended by the Swaminathan Committee, is essential to safeguard farmers’ livelihoods.Tikait also called for the implementation of a Minimum Support Price (MSP) Guarantee Law to ensure fair prices for farmers growing other crops. “Farmers are drowning in debt due to flawed policies, and this debt must be waived entirely,” he said.On the UP govt’s decision to privatise electricity distribution under UPPCL, he said, “Privatisation will put undue pressure on consumers and workers. Instead of addressing financial mismanagement, the govt is shifting the burden onto the public,” he added.
