Fiji : Showers forecast for sugarcane belt areas
As Fiji enters its dry season, variable rainfall is predicted across the sugarcane belt, with Northern Viti Levu and parts of the Northern Division expecting some rain, while other areas may see lower rainfall. The Fiji Meteorological Service forecasts increased rainfall from October, with a 75% chance of receiving 400-600mm in Viti Levu and 600-800mm in Vanua Levu from October to December 2024. Farmers planting cane in September-October are advised to prepare land, order fertilizers, and use certified seedcane for replanting.
As Fiji is now into the dry season, variable rainfall is expected across the sugarcane belt areas, with the Northern Viti Levu and parts of the Northern Division likely to receive some rain, while the rest of the areas are likely to experience low rainfall.
Fiji Meteorological Service shared this in its latest Fiji Sugarcane Rainfall Outlook from September to December 2024.
It is forecasting rainfall to increase from October onwards.
“During October to December 2024 period, there is a high (75 per cent) chance of receiving at least 400 – 600mm of rainfall across sugarcane growing areas in Viti Levu, while there is high chance of receiving at least 600-800mm of rainfall across sugarcane belt areas in Vanua Levu,” the outlook states.
Farmers who plant cane in the September-October period have been advised to start land preparation now and order fertilisers to ensure timely application.
“Use only Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) certified seedcane for replanting to ensure good germination and disease-free plants,” the outlook adds.
“Do not plant unapproved varieties.”
Fiji Met is urging farmers to adhere to weather forecasts when planning harvesting and planting activities.
