Government fixes 23 LMT monthly sugar quota for domestic sale in April 2026

Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has set the April 2026 domestic sugar sales quota at 23 lakh metric tonnes, slightly higher than March’s allocation. The increase aims to meet rising summer demand, while authorities closely monitor supply as sugar mills near the end of the current crushing season.

In an announcement on March 25, the Food Ministry allocated a monthly sugar quota of 23 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) for April 2026, which is higher than the quota allocated for March 2026 of 22.5 LMT.

In April 2025, the government had allocated a monthly sugar quota of 23.5 LMT for domestic sale

According to market experts, the higher sugar allocation by the Government for April 2026 compared to the previous month is keeping in mind the likely higher sugar demand catering to the summer season, which usually peaks during April and May, before the monsoon starts. The market is expected to remain range-bound with this quota announcement.

The sugar mills are expected to close crushing operations soon, hence the Government is cautiously watching the sugar pipeline.
