Bihar : Govt invites bids for jaggery units in all dists
The Bihar government is promoting jaggery production by inviting investors to establish units across all districts, offering subsidies based on sugarcane crushing capacity. With rising demand for jaggery over sugar, the initiative supports expanding sugarcane cultivation. The government has approved 81 units for 2024-25 and allocated ₹12.4 crore in subsidies, aiming to position Bihar among top jaggery-producing states.
Patna: With the state govt deciding to extend sugarcane cultivation across Bihar, sugarcane industries minister Krishnanandan Paswan on Wednesday invited investors to establish jaggery production units in all 38 districts, saying they would be provided with subsidies.Sugarcane industries deprincipal secretary Narmadeshwar Lal said consumers, including in metropolitan cities, prefer jaggery over sugar for health reasons.
“Accordingly, the state govt has decided to promote jaggery production and provide incentives to the investors in proportion to the per day sugarcane crushing capacity of their units,” Lal said.Lal added the department’s sugarcane care software would be launched here on October 1. “Aim is to make the selection process transparent. Entrepreneurs can submit their applications online.
The jaggery production units have to be established outside the 15-km radius of the existing 10 sugar mills, including Riga mill, which is closed for the last four years, but would soon become operational,” he said.He further said during 2024-25 financial year, sanctions have already been given for establishing 81 jaggery production units, and a separate allotment of Rs 12.4 crore for the payment of subsidy has also been made. “There is a huge scope for jiggery units in Bihar. It can get into the bracket of top five states, and can even vie for the third position with Tamil Nadu after Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra,” Lal said.Sugarcane cultivation is done in 2.5 lakh hectare area in Bihar.
