Grain prices hold steady as traders gauge rain impact
India grain markets remained steady as traders assessed rain impact on crops. Wheat and maize prices stayed range-bound amid mixed quality arrivals, while rice held firm. Market sentiment remains cautious, with weather-driven quality risks likely to influence price trends in the coming weeks.
Prices of key foodgrains across major spot markets in India remained largely unchanged on Monday, as traders assessed the impact of recent unseasonal rains on standing rabi crops, particularly wheat and maize.
Wheat prices held steady across key mandis amid limited demand and mixed crop quality. In Kota, Rajasthan, prices were quoted at ₹2,300–₹2,451 per 100 kg, while arrivals increased significantly by 25,000 bags to 2 lakh bags. Traders said buying activity was largely restricted to millers and stockists taking advantage of relatively lower prices, with overall demand remaining subdued.
Market participants noted that the quality of fresh arrivals has been uneven, with a mix of good, average and lower-grade produce entering mandis. This variation has kept price movement rangebound.
In Indore, wheat prices remained stable at ₹2,450 per 100 kg, while in Navi Mumbai’s Vashi market, prices were unchanged at ₹2,600 per 100 kg.
Traders expect wheat prices to fluctuate within a narrow band of ₹10–₹20 per 100 kg in the near term. The trajectory will largely depend on the quality of arrivals once peak inflows begin after mid-april. The market is currently in a price discovery phase following a brief closure during late March due to festivals and financial year-end activity. Maize prices also remained steady, supported by stable demand.
In Indore, maize was priced at ₹1,900 per 100 kg, while in Davangere, Karnataka, prices ranged between ₹1,750 and ₹1,850 per 100 kg with steady arrivals.
However, concerns persist over crop quality due to prolonged exposure to moisture caused by recent rains, especially in northern regions. Although there are no confirmed reports of significant crop losses, traders indicated that excess moisture may impact grain quality, which could influence prices in the coming weeks.
Rice prices, including both basmati and non-basmati varieties, were also unchanged amid stable demand conditions. Prices of premium basmati varieties such as 1121 and 1401 remained steady in key wholesale markets.
Overall, the grain market remains cautious, with participants closely monitoring crop conditions and arrival trends. While prices are currently stable, any deterioration in crop quality or supply disruptions due to weather conditions could drive volatility in the near term.
