Gujarat’s Rabi sowing lags 3-yr avg by 18.5%; wheat, gram acreage declines

Reeling from losses caused by unseasonal rains during the Kharif season, farmers in Gujarat have made a slow start to the ongoing Rabi sowing. As of December 15, Rabi sowing in the state is 18.5 per cent lower than the three-year average, reflecting lingering stress among cultivators despite government relief measures
According to data released by the Gujarat government, farmers have sown Rabi crops across 37.51 lakh hectares, marginally higher than the 37.14 lakh hectares recorded during the same period last year. However, the current sowing area remains significantly below the three-year average of 46.06 lakh hectares. Wheat accounts for the largest share of Rabi sowing, covering 10.83 lakh hectares, which is 14 percent lower than the average wheat sowing area of 12.64 lakh hectares. Gram has been sown across 7.09 lakh hectares, marking a decline of nearly 15 percent compared to the three-year average.
Sowing of major cash crops has also seen a notable drop. Cumin cultivation stands at 3.24 lakh hectares, reflecting a 15 percent decline, while mustard sowing has reached 2.65 lakh hectares, down 14 percent from the average levels.
