Haryana : Ambala farmers get Rs 3.89-cr incentive for adopting direct seeded rice tech

Adoption of Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) is rising steadily in Ambala, with over 1,400 farmers receiving ₹3.89 crore in incentives in 2025–26 for covering 8,653 acres. The water-saving technique reduces labour and groundwater use, while parallel incentives under MPMV also encouraged crop diversification.

Over 1,400 farmers in Ambala have received over Rs 3.89 crore for adopting the Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) technique for paddy crop, leaving the traditional transplantation method, in the last season. An increasing trend is being observed in the adoption of DSR in Ambala over the past three years.

As per the data procured from the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department, the DSR technique was adopted on nearly 4,691 acres and the farmers had received over Rs 1.87 crore as incentive in 2023-24. The area increased to nearly 6,100 acres and the farmers received over Rs 2.44 crore as incentive in 2024-25. As the farmers’ interest grew gradually, the DSR was adopted in over 8,653 acres and the farmers have received over Rs 3.89 crore for the season 2025-26.

An official in the Agriculture Department said, “The DSR technique is getting popular gradually. Last year, 1,471 farmers adopted DSR. Nearly 9,367 acres were registered for incentives of which nearly 8,653 acres were verified during the verification process. The eligible farmers have been given the incentive. The DSR technique involves direct seeding of rice rather than the conservative transplantation method. It requires lesser use of water, resources and labour and is considered a better technique as it also saves groundwater. The government offers an incentive of Rs 4,500 per acre for adopting the DSR technique.”

Along with DSR, the farmers who had adopted the Mera Pani Meri Virasat (MPMV) scheme have also received incentives of Rs 3.07 crore for the season 2025-26. As per the data, as many as 3,015 farmers had registered over 4,100 acres under the MPMV. Of that, nearly 3,845 acres were verified and the incentives have been released. The government offers an incentive of Rs 8,000 per acre to farmers for shifting from paddy to alternative crops.

Deputy Director Agriculture (DDA) Ambala Dr Jasvinder Saini said, “Farmers have received incentives under the DSR and MPMV schemes. The farmers have been showing good interest in both the schemes and we are hopeful that the number of beneficiaries will increase further in the coming years.”
