Haryana : Floodwater enters Yamunanagar mill in Haryana, damages around Rs 50 crore sugar stock

Heavy rain in Yamunanagar damaged about 1.25 lakh quintals of sugar worth ₹50 crore at Saraswati Sugar Mills. Rainwater and an overflowing drain flooded two warehouses. CEO SK Sachdeva said six layers of sugar bags were affected, and salvage efforts are ongoing. The mill, Asia’s largest, sources cane from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh districts.

Heavy overnight rainfall in Yamunanagar has damaged around 1.25 lakh quintals of sugar, valued at nearly Rs 50 crore, stored at two warehouses belonging to Saraswati Sugar Mills, officials said on Monday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that Yamunanagar received 37.9 mm of rainfall, a significant increase over the usual 5.6 mm expected for the day.

However, SK Sachdeva, CEO of Saraswati Sugar Mills said, “Our security staff alerted us around midnight about water entering the premises. Rainwater, along with overflow from a nearby drain, began flooding our godowns at Yamuna Syndicate. By morning, we found three to four feet of water inside two warehouses storing around 2.2 lakh quintals of sugar.” Pumping equipment and workers were promptly deployed to remove the water.

He further said the damage was extensive, as sugar is highly hygroscopic. “Over six layers of sugar bags were affected. Preliminary estimates indicate a loss of 1 to 1.25 lakh quintals, with a value between Rs 45 crore and Rs 50 crore. Final figures could rise as efforts to salvage the remaining stock are still underway,” he added.

Saraswati Sugar Mills, regarded as Asia’s largest sugar mill, sources sugarcane from farmers in Yamunanagar and neighboring districts such as Ambala, Kurukshetra, Karnal in Haryana, and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh.
