High maize rates increase poultry feed cost by 14%

Rising maize prices in Indore have sparked a 14% increase in poultry feed costs, hitting poultry farm owners hard. Maize, a key ingredient, has surged to Rs 2,400-Rs2,425 per quintal from Rs 2,300, escalating rearing expenses. Sayyed Rehman Ali, a poultry farm owner, noted reduced production by over 20% due to high input costs and soaring temperatures. Retail prices reflect the strain, with chicken at Rs 250-Rs 260/kg and eggs at Rs 7-Rs 8/piece due to dwindling supplies.

Indore: High maize prices owing to lower spot supplies and increased demand by ethanol manufacturers, has lifted cost of poultry feed by 14% raising rearing cost in the poultry sector.

The cost of poultry feed has jumped to Rs 40 per kg as against Rs 35 per kg in the corresponding period a year ago due to high prices of maize, a major ingredient used in poultry feed, lifting the rearing cost, said poultry farm owners.

The cost of maize has jumped to Rs 2,400-Rs2,425 per quintal as against Rs 2,300 per quintal in the last week of May, said farmers and traders.

“Maize prices have shot up and this has made rearing expensive. Overall input cost has gone up because maize is an important ingredient in cattle feed and this cannot be reduced whatever price stays. Though high maize prices are compensated to some extent due to better poultry prices,” said Sayyed Rehman Ali, a poultry farm owner from Ratlam.

Poultry farms have reduced production by over 20% due to high input cost and increased mortality rate due to excessive temperature. In summers, poultry farms control temperature for birds by installing environmental controlled sheds, circulating fans and water sprinklers.

Indore is a major trading centre for poultry products from where eggs and chickens are routed to several locations in the state.

Chicken prices in retail have jumped to Rs 250-Rs260 per kg and eggs are priced at Rs 7-Rs 8 per piece due to lower supplies, said retailers.

Dinesh Makhija, owner of a poultry farm in Indore said, production of eggs at his farm has dropped by 10% to 30,000 eggs per day.
